Lake Jipe Day trip
WHERE IS LAKE JIPE?
Lake Jipe straddles the border between Kenya and Tanzania. On the Tanzania side, it is situated within Mwanga District, in Kilimanjaro Region, while on the Kenyan side, it is located south of the village of Nghonji. The lake is fed mainly by the Lumi River, which descends from Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as streams from the North Pare Mountains.
Lots of fish, birds, and hippos! The fishing boats here have an almost Venetian look, but with an African twist of course! Experience the authentic Tanzanian rural life around Lake Jipe and float around in peace and quiet; you will not come across other tourists here.
The lake’s outlet forms the Ruvu River. Kenya’s unfenced Tsavo West National Park protects part of the lake’s northern shore, while on the Tanzania side Mkomazi Game Reserve is nearby. The lake is known for fish, water birds, mammals like hippoppotamus, wetland plants and lake-edge swamps.
Lake Jipe is a relatively small and cute lake nestled in the North of Tanzania, on the border with Kenya. This green lake is fed by the Lumi River, which flows from Kilimanjaro. The southern side of the lake is adjacent to the Kili region, but you can only visit the northern banks if you happen to be in the Tsavo West National Park, in Kenya. The lake is surrounded by thick reeds where elephants trudge through to quench their thirst on the waters’ edge.
The Tastiest Tilapia!
Canoe through the tall reeds and look for the different waterfowl, hippos or crocodiles. Fish for your own lunch and enjoy the freshest Tilapia you will ever taste! Combine Lake Jipe with an off-the-beaten-track hike in the Pare Mountains or brave a slightly more famous mountain range in Tanzania: the Usambara Mountains.
